About me

My name is Michelle Smart and I live in Estevan, Saskatchewan. My family and I moved from Manitoba 3 years ago after we sold our family farm and wanted to relocate.  I am now working at a K-8 school in Estevan with a population of about 215 students.  I am the vice-principal and learning support teacher.

I am married and have 3 children, Taylor, who is 19, Cassy who is 18 and Nate, who is 13. We live on an acreage about 5 miles out of the city and spend quite a bit of time working on the many, many jobs that still need to be done. Last spring we planted about 1800 trees! This spring we hope to finish landscaping and actually start to grow some grass.

I have many things that I like to do in my spare time: read, both professionally and for fun, follow blogs, surf around on the net, scrapbook, watch reality TV, fitness activities, spending time in the outdoors and spending time with my children.   The problem is, just like everyone else, I do not have a lot of time for these things.

I also love to travel, especially to hot destinations where I can soak up the sun.  Saskatchewan does not give me enough heat in the winter or the summer.

I use technology every day at my job and spend time encouraging and helping my staff to implement it into their daily lessons. I have helped  teachers set up and use class blogs and wiki spaces.  I am currently involved in a Technology Integration Project (TIP) where we are trying to improve reading skills in our early years students through the use of I-pads.   Last year we had a Dr. Stirling McDowell educational research grant to try to improve student engagement in grades 5-8 social studies by using web 2.0 tools.

As a learner,  I am both active and reflective.  The thing that makes my learning curve go off the chart would have to be trying new things. I  enjoy being just out of my element and love the satisfaction of figuring something out and having it be successful. I have just completed my Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction where I have been concentrating on technology education.
